Updated: Jun 14, 2021

Worrying too much about having or coming to have a serious illness brings anxiety. If to relieve the person stays on the internet researching it may end up getting even more anxious. This is what has been shown by studies on cyberchondria, the excessive online search for information about diseases.

On the internet, it is not always easy to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources, the data is often inaccurate or conflicting, the person discovers other diseases and new reasons to worry. Cyberchondria becomes a self-perpetuating disorder.

The more one seeks anxiety relief online, the more one becomes anxious, and the more one continues to seek. Recognizing that what we do to relieve anxiety is precisely what keeps it going and even makes it worse is the first step in treating the problem.
